Group trips in South Africa

Cape Town, the Garden Route and Kruger: a two-week road trip, better with more hands on the wheel.

โฑ Typical length: 12โ€“16 days๐Ÿ’ถ Budget: medium๐Ÿ”๏ธ Adventureโœˆ๏ธ Mixed

South Africa is a road-trip country: Cape Town with Table Mountain and the penguin peninsula, the Stellenbosch vineyards, the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth, then a flight to Kruger and a safari in your own car. Excellent roads, great hostels and guesthouses, low prices for the standard.

As a group the road trip works better: drivers taking turns, a big car split five ways, whole houses on the coast. And the self-drive safari in Kruger, with your own car and the park's rest camps, is among the cheapest experiences in Africa.

๐Ÿ’ก The group tip

Rent a large car with at least three registered drivers and book the Kruger rest camps (SANParks) months ahead. Enter the park gates at opening time: the first two hours are worth the whole day.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for South Africa?

Twelve to sixteen days for Cape Town, the Garden Route and Kruger. A week covers Cape Town with the peninsula and the vineyards well, a stop you can also join on its own.

Do I need a visa for South Africa?

Most European citizens enter visa-free for short tourist stays, with a valid passport with blank pages. Check the current rules with your foreign office.

Is South Africa safe?

Tourist areas are visited with the usual precautions: no valuables on show, drive in the evening, stay in recommended neighbourhoods. Travelling as a group helps, as everywhere.
