Group trips in Namibia
Sossusvlei dunes, Etosha and skies without lights: the 4x4 road trip to split four ways.
Namibia is space: the red dunes of Sossusvlei, the dead trees of Deadvlei, the shipwreck coast at Swakopmund, Etosha park with its animal-crowded waterholes and the granite of Damaraland. You travel independently, in a 4x4 with a rooftop tent, on gravel but well-kept roads.
It is the trip where a group is almost mandatory: the equipped 4x4 is the main expense and is split four ways; distances are covered taking turns at the wheel; campsites under the Milky Way are enjoyed in company. Not great for partial participation, perfect for a close-knit group.
Upcoming trips in Namibia
No trip is scheduled right now. Organise it yourself: publish the itinerary, others ask to join and you approve.
When to go
May to October, dry season: animals at the Etosha waterholes, clear skies, cold desert nights. November–April is the rainy season, with green landscapes but scattered animals and strong heat.
Don't miss
- Sossusvlei and Deadvlei — Dune 45 at dawn and the dead trees on the white pan.
- Etosha — Self-drive safari around the waterholes.
- Swakopmund — Dunes meeting the ocean, sandboarding, Walvis Bay with its seals.
- Damaraland — Spitzkoppe, the Twyfelfontein engravings, desert elephants.
- Fish River Canyon — The world's second-largest canyon, in the south.
💡 The group tip
Four people per 4x4 with two rooftop tents: the standard and cheapest set-up. Book the campsites inside Etosha and at Sesriem months ahead, and carry two spare wheels: punctures are the norm.
Documents and entry
Entry rules depend on your nationality and change over time: always check your foreign office before booking. The official source for Italian citizens is linked below.
Official country page on Viaggiare Sicuri (Italian foreign office) ↗Frequently asked questions
How many days for Namibia?
At least twelve to fifteen for the Windhoek–Sossusvlei–Swakopmund–Damaraland–Etosha loop: distances are long and roads are gravel. Fewer days means dropping a region.
Do I need a visa for Namibia?
Entry rules for many European citizens changed recently and now involve a paid visa on arrival or online: check your foreign office and the official portal before booking.
Do I need gravel-driving experience?
It helps but is not essential: low speed, no night driving and care in sand. With several drivers in the group you take turns and arrive rested.
