How Worldmates works 🌍
Worldmates is the app to find travel companions and join group trips: you take part in the whole trip, or only in the part that fits your plans. Here is how it works in five steps.
1. Find a trip (or create your own)
Search by destination, dates, departure area or travel style. Every trip has a stop-by-stop itinerary with dates, a map, planned experiences and the profile of the organizer — with reviews and travel affinity computed on your profiles.
2. Join: the whole trip, or just a part
The simplest way is "Join the whole trip": one click and you ask to be part of the group for the entire itinerary. But if you are already nearby or have only a few days, you can join only some stops — even with your own dates ("arrive later, leave earlier") — and pick which experiences to take part in. That is what makes Worldmates different.
3. The organizer approves
Nobody enters the group without a yes from the organizer: it is the safety barrier for travelling among strangers. There are also reviews between travel mates, reporting, blocking and — for those who organise professionally — the ✓ badge of verified creator or guide.
4. The group decides together
If the organizer wants to change a stop that already has participants, the change becomes a proposal: participants vote, and it passes only with a majority of yes. Whoever disagrees keeps their own dates. Group chat and direct messages between friends to get organised.
5. Bookings? You make them
Worldmates is not a tour operator and handles no payments: flights, lodging and activities are booked by each traveller. The organizer can share the references of what they booked (flight, hostel…) so the group can align — but those are information, not commercial offers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find travel companions on Worldmates?
You search for a trip by destination, dates, departure area or travel style and ask to join the group: the organizer approves. Or you organise a trip yourself and other travellers ask you to join. You can also see the travellers most compatible with you, computed from your profiles, and message anyone who becomes your friend.
What is Worldmates?
Worldmates is an app and website to find travel companions and join group trips. The difference from the others: you can take part in the whole trip or only in some stops or experiences, even with your own dates. It is made for travelling in a group with like-minded people, in Italy and around the world.
Can I join only part of a group trip?
Yes, and it is the feature that sets Worldmates apart. If you are already in the area or have only a few days, you can join a single stop of the itinerary, with your own dates (arrive later, leave earlier) and choosing which experiences to take part in, without committing to the entire trip.
Is it safe to travel with strangers?
Nobody enters a group without the approval of whoever organises the trip: that is the first safety barrier. On top of that there are profiles with reviews between travel mates, affinity computed on interests, reporting and blocking of users, and a verified badge for creators and guides. We always recommend getting to know each other in the chat before leaving.
Is Worldmates free?
Yes. Signing up, searching trips, organising one and joining a group are free. There are no platform fees to take part.
Do I pay for the trip on the platform?
No. Worldmates is not a tour operator and handles no payments: flights, lodging and activities are booked by each traveller on their own. The organizer can share the references of what they booked so the group can align, but those are information, not commercial offers.
How do I organise a group trip?
You create a trip with one or more stops (destination, dates, map), add the planned experiences and publish it. From then on other travellers can ask to join and you approve them. If you need to change a stop that already has participants, the change becomes a proposal the group votes on.
Which devices does it work on?
Worldmates works in the browser at worldmates.it, can be installed as an app (PWA) and there is an Android app. The iOS version reaches the stores in the next phase. Backend and data are the same on every device.
