Group trips in New Zealand

Fjords, glaciers and the land of Frodo by camper: the road trip you dream of as a foursome.

⏱ Typical length: 14–21 days💶 Budget: high🏔️ Adventure🎒 Backpacking

New Zealand is the road-trip destination: the South Island with Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mount Cook and turquoise lakes, Abel Tasman for kayaking; the North Island with Rotorua, the Tongariro Crossing and the Coromandel beaches. Everywhere scenic roads, well-kept campsites and hikes of every level.

The camper is the local formula and the group makes it affordable: four people split vehicle and fuel, and the "Great Walks" are booked together months ahead. With three weeks you do both islands; with two you focus on the South, the stop many join.

💡 The group tip

A four-berth camper and the DOC campsites (cheap, often in extraordinary spots): that is how you travel here. Book the inter-island ferry and the Great Walks (Milford, Routeburn) as soon as sales open.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks for New Zealand?

Two for the South Island, three for both. Distances look short on the map but roads are slow and you stop constantly: no more than 250 kilometres a day.

Do I need a visa for New Zealand?

Most European citizens need no visa but must request online, before departure, the paid NZeTA, which includes the tourist levy. Check your foreign office.

Is New Zealand expensive?

Yes for campers, excursions and restaurants, less so for campsites and groceries. A group in a self-catering camper is the cheapest way to enjoy it well.
