Group trips in Vietnam

From Hanoi to the Mekong delta: 1,600 kilometres of rice paddies, bays and scooter-filled cities.

⏱ Typical length: 12–18 days💶 Budget: low🎒 Backpacking🏛️ Culture🏔️ Adventure

Vietnam is travelled north to south (or the reverse) along a backbone of trains and night buses: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, the mountains of Sapa, the centre with Hue and Hoi An, then Ho Chi Minh City and the delta. It is cheap, safe and has a cuisine worth the trip on its own.

It works for groups because distances are long but the route is linear: those with fewer days join only the north or only the centre and meet the others along the way. Bay cruises and the Ha Giang motorbike loop are best organised with six or eight people.

The north is best between October and April (cool, dry winter), the centre between February and August, the south between December and April. To cover the whole country, February–April is the best compromise.

💡 The group tip

On night trains book a whole cabin (four berths) per group: you travel among friends and sleep better. Bay cruises price by double cabin, so pairs of friends split the cost in half.

Documents and entry

Passport required (valid for at least 6 months). Visa exemption for short tourist stays (up to 45 days).

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Vietnam?

Two weeks for the full north–south route with Ha Long, Hoi An and the Mekong; 10 days are enough for north and centre. On Worldmates you can join only the part that fits your dates.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Many European citizens enter visa-free for short tourist stays; longer visits need the online e-visa. Check the current rules with your foreign office.

Is Vietnam safe for a group?

Yes, it is among the safest countries in South-east Asia. Mind the city traffic and taxi scams: use ride-hailing apps and move together at night.
