Group trips in Japan

Temples, bullet trains and midnight ramen: the trip that works best with a group.

⏱ Typical length: 10–16 days💶 Budget: high🏛️ Culture✈️ Mixed🎒 Backpacking

Japan is the ideal country for a first long-haul group trip: extremely safe, punctual and easy to cross by train even without the language. The classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route takes ten days; with two weeks you add Hiroshima, Nara and an onsen at the foot of Mount Fuji.

Travelling as a group here cuts the costs that hurt most: a Tokyo apartment split four ways is cheaper than a hostel bed each, and traditional ryokan have rooms for three or four futons. The Japan Rail Pass only pays off when you move a lot, and groups move.

Spring (late March–May) for cherry blossoms and autumn (October–November) for red maples. June–July is the rainy season, August is hot and humid; December–February is cold but clear and quiet.

💡 The group tip

Split the bookings: ramen shops and izakaya often cannot seat more than four, so a group of eight dines happily at two nearby tables. Reserve seats on long-distance trains for everyone on the same departure.

Documents and entry

Passport required. Visa exemption for tourism up to 90 days. Filling in Visit Japan Web is recommended for faster immigration and customs.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a group trip to Japan?

The classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route takes 10 days; with 12–16 days you add Hiroshima, Nara, Mount Fuji and an onsen. On Worldmates you can also join a single stop, for example the Kyoto days.

Do I need a visa for Japan?

Most EU citizens can visit for tourism up to 90 days without a visa, with a valid passport. Always check the current rules with your foreign office before you leave.

Is Japan expensive?

Less than people think: eating out is cheap, so is city transport; flights, bullet trains and big-city lodging are what cost. Groups split apartments and taxis, and the rail pass only pays off if you travel a lot.
