Group trips in Sri Lanka

Tea plantations, scenic trains, leopards and surf: a continent in one island.

โฑ Typical length: 10โ€“14 days๐Ÿ’ถ Budget: low๐ŸŽ’ Backpacking๐Ÿ”๏ธ Adventure๐Ÿ–๏ธ Relax

Sri Lanka packs ancient temples, green tea mountains, elephant and leopard safaris and surf beaches into an island half the size of Italy. The classic loop starts at Sigiriya and Kandy, climbs to Ella on Asia's most beautiful train and ends on the south coast between Mirissa and Galle.

It suits a group with different dates: with a week you do the cultural triangle and the hills, with two you add the Yala safari and the sea. A van with driver for the whole loop is the local formula, and split six ways it costs very little each.

When to go

December to March for the south-west coast and the hills; the east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) is best from April to September. The island has two monsoons, so one side is always dry.

Don't miss

๐Ÿ’ก The group tip

Book the Kandyโ€“Ella train with reserved seats as soon as sales open: the observation carriages sell out in minutes. A safari jeep carries six: the right group size to split the cost.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Sri Lanka?

10โ€“12 days for the full loop with cultural triangle, hills, safari and south coast. A week covers the central part well, and on Worldmates you can join only the beach days.

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

An electronic travel authorisation (ETA) must be requested online before departure; conditions and fees change often. Check your foreign office and the official portal before booking.

Is Sri Lanka good for first-time group travellers?

Very: short distances, hospitable people, widespread English and low costs. A van with driver keeps the trip comfortable even for large groups.
